The Festival of the Atlantic is an important event that combines entertainment and culture. It has three components: the Madeira Music Festival, the International Fireworks Competition and performances by philharmonic bands in the city centre.

Calheta is the main producer of sugar cane and it's famous "aguardente" (sugar cane rum) at the "Engenhos da Calheta" (destillary).
One could describe this area as mountain peaks, sloping valleys and lush vegetation make this agricultural village an interesting stop over.
